Abstract
The program begins with a brief discussion of the types and sources of
software development risk. It moves on to a case study that contrasts
two companies, one that uses a consistent software development process
and one that does not. I then talk about the origins of the Software
Engineering Institute and present its latest findings on the general state
of maturity of the software industry. The question, "Why Improve
the Software Process?" is answered and I lay out a list of significant
benefits to the organization including reduced costs, shorter product time-to-market
and fewer post-release software defects. The program continues with a discussion
of where in the development lifecycle software defects are introduced and
their cost impacts. Following that is a detailed discussion of recommended
process improvements for risk mitigation. The talk concludes with suggested
"next steps" for the organization.
