Adaptable Software Applications

using Object Oriented Design Patterns

(A Practical and Realistic Approach)

A Professional Development Seminar

SPEAKER

Marshall P. Cline

OVERVIEW

Software adaptability is an increasingly common non-functional requirement for business applications in today's rapidly changing business culture. Software applications absolutely must be at least as adaptable as the businesses they support. Yet adaptability is fraught with danger (translation: many projects that try it fail to achieve their goals), is not well supported by project management techniques (e.g., it is rarely if ever quantitatively specified or tested), and is often not even understood by the technical people who are supposed to perform the work.

This presentation provides extremely practical approaches that have been proven to work in the real world (people wanting to hear untested theories will be disappointed). Attendees will learn the "common strategic blunders" such as focusing on "reuse", focusing on the technological parts rather than the business drivers, and several other "danger spots" of adaptable software. Finally, attendees will be given techniques that support the entire lifecycle of adaptable software: specification, design, construction, testing, plus the adaptations themselves.

SPEAKER

Marshall P. Cline

Perot Systems Corp.

Marshall P. Cline is a technology leader with an emphasis on business pragmatics over technical elegance. He is known for insights aimed at reducing business risk when applying emerging technologies. His "C++ FAQs" and "CORBA FAQs" web documents have been read by a global audience of hundreds of thousands of people. He is an energetic speaker who travels 50,000 miles per year for invited lectures across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and more recently China.

Dr. Cline develops technical strategies for Perot Systems Corp., a 4,500 person consulting organization with headquarters in Dallas, Texas. Before joining Perot Systems Corp., Cline was the founder and president of Paradigm Shift, Inc., a service organization with emphasis on guiding organizations through their transition to and application of emerging technologies.

Dr. Cline received the Ph.D. (1989) and M.S. (1983) from the Electrical and Computer Engineering department of Clarkson University, and the B.S. cum laude with highest honors in Physics from St. Lawrence University (1981). He is a member of the ACM, IEEE, Pi Mu Epsilon, and Sigma Pi Sigma.

Preliminary OUTLINE

1. Business drivers of adaptability

Attendees will learn the new forces that are shaping our industry.

2. Specification of adaptability

Attendees will learn about the latest technique for this called Enduring Business Themes (EBTs).

3. Designing adaptability

Attendees will learn how EBTs can be turned into "engines" via Enduring Business Frameworks (EBFs), and will learn about Object Oriented Design Patterns which are the underlying design-level mechanics used to produce EBFs.

4. Testing adaptability

Attendees will learn how to make software objects "self aware", and will learn an Object Oriented inspection technique that supports future adaptability.
